Grandma’s Cookies

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
— Colossians 3: 20 , Christian Standard Bible

As soon as we got home, we could smell a hint of fresh cookies.

No one was around, but we instantly saw those delicious cookies cooling off on a large metal tray.  They looked yummy! They seemed to be calling us.   Cyclone looked at me and asked if I thought Grandma would mind if we had a couple of those fresh cookies.  I said, “I think it would be alright.  I am sure she plans for them to be eaten sometime…”

One morning after breakfast, Cyclone and I went out for a skateboarding trip.  It was a warm and sunny day so we decided to go to the end of our street, where Mr. Paul’s car was hit with rocks by a couple of bad boys.  After that, Cyclone and I just flew down the main drive and through the cul-de-sac where we had encountered Mr. Smith and his dog.  That side street to the cul-de-sac was also the same location where my first skateboard was run over.  Our trip sure brought up some big memories. (Read all about them in The Adventures of Blizzard!)

Being two young boys, we had spent a lot of energy riding our skateboards.  This brought on some serious hunger pangs for my brother and me.

As soon as we got home, we could smell a hint of fresh cookies.  As we entered the kitchen, the smell of fresh cookies filled our noses. I am sure she plans for them to be eaten sometime and they surely are not getting any better just by sitting there right now.”  So, we confidently went and took some.  Oh, they tasted so-o good!

After eating two cookies, I was still hungry.  Cyclone said, “Grandma sure makes great cookies, doesn’t she?”  I replied, “I think so, but I ate mine so fast, I can’t be sure.  We need to try a few more with a glass of milk to be positive.”

We were just finishing our very last cookie when Grandma came into the kitchen.  I swallowed the last of my milk as Cyclone was just starring at Grandma.  He sensed that something was wrong.

“Did you enjoy the cookies, boys”, Grandma asked?  We both agreed they were very good.

I did not want to let on that I had the sinking feeling that we were in trouble, so I said, “It is amazing that when we went by some of old places that had been so scarry before, we just stopped to talk and laugh.

Even though the experiences were difficult the first time, the memories are now very special.”

“Do you know that you boys are going to have another good memory”, Grandma asked?  “You boys are going to learn how to make cookies.” She proceeded to take out all the cookie making utensils and right away we were learning to make cookies.

The cookie making experience was a lot of fun and I was glad to be a part of it.  I think I can now follow Grandma’s instructions and make some on my own if I have too.

It was what happened later that was so awful!

Cyclone and I both had to attend the senior lady’s Bible study that evening.  We also took some of the fresh cookies we had made to a shut-in lady’s home.  Grandma even told the women that Cyclone and I had made the cookies for them.  That was fun, and the ladies all wanted to tell us how great the cookies were.

Then they commented on how cute we are.  Yuck!   That was bad enough.  But Grandma told us boys that we could only have one cookie.  We needed to sit quietly on the floor, one on each side of where she was seated. The separation was to keep us from becoming rambunctious.

After, the Bible study, the ladies continued to talk for over an hour.  We had to hear it all!  (Sigh)  The first subject was about Mrs. Martin’s daughter who was expecting a baby shortly.  Then the conversation turned to a discussion about baby clothes and grandchildren and on and on.  Finally, Cyclone and I had to quietly and patiently hear about Mrs. Anderson’s arthritis.

Through all of that and at home, Grandma never ever said a word to Cyclone or me about helping ourselves, without asking, to have her cookies.  But trust me, we learned our lesson and will not help ourselves to them again.

Dear Friends,

Cyclone and I knew the cookies Grandma had made were there for a reason.  We knew we should have asked before we helped ourselves, but we messed up.

Here is one of my favorite verses of scripture for times when I mess up or get to thinking I don’t need to ask first if something is OK.

Maybe you will remember it when you are tempted to help yourself to something.  Maybe you won’t make the mistake Cyclone and I did.

Colossians 3: 20  says “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
