Remembering Easter
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.”
Cyclone asked why Jesus was teaching His friends about gardening.
Grandma said, “Boys, these flowers have died, but before that, they produced the seed that will make a bunch of new flowers. Jesus teaches us, it is necessary for plants like these flowers to die so that new ones will have life.
My brother Cyclone and I were back with Grandpa from our annual hunting trip. It was a long, four- and one-half week outing. It was somewhat disappointing as Grandpa did not get an elk. Still, we had a great time and we enjoyed each day.
While we were gone things changed back home. Summer had turned to Fall and, now, there was some morning frost. Our garden looked like it was ready to be tilled under. Many of Grandma’s flowers were wilted and dried up.
After breakfast and bible study Cyclone and I went to our bedroom to jump on the bed. Our sisters, Bertha and Bella joined us. It was good to be together again. I missed them a lot while we were gone.
Suddenly just as I landed back on the bed after doing a summersault, it dawned on me; Grandpa and Grandma were outdoors. I needed to go out and help my partner. He was surely cleaning and putting away our camping equipment. “Cyclone lets go help Grandpa,” I said.
When Cyclone and I stepped out of the garage with our play clothes on, we noticed Grandma was working in her little garden. She was clearing out a bunch of dried-up flowers. Part of each flower she put in a plastic bag and the rest she placed in the wheel barrow.
“Why don’t you toss the whole plant in the wheel barrow,” I asked while Cyclone looked on with a puzzled expression.
Grandma said, “Boys, these flowers have died, but before that, they produced the seed that will make a bunch of new flowers. Jesus teaches us, it is necessary for plants like these flowers to die so that new ones will have life. In John 12:24 Jesus tells us, ‘Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.’”
Cyclone asked why Jesus was teaching His friends about gardening.
Grandma told us, “Jesus was not teaching His followers about gardening. He was explaining why, like these flowers, He was going to die. Because He died, His faithful followers will have eternal life. We know we will have life forever because He, too, came back to life. In John 11:25 we read “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.’“
“At Easter we remember He really came back to life. And because He lives; His followers, like the dried seeds here, will have life too.”
I asked, “Were you dead, like these seeds, before you accepted Jesus as your Lord?”
Grandma said, “Spiritually everyone is like these dried up seeds until God gives us life in Jesus Christ. This new and eternal life happens to everyone that confesses they are sinners and they ask Jesus to be their Lord and Savior.”
Cyclone and I looked at each other. Cyclone said he never thought about Jesus that way. I said, “That was a high price Jesus paid to save sinners, wasn’t it?”
Grandma said, “The punishment had to fit the crime. Sin is not a trivial matter. Neither is God’s love for us. He loves us so much He sent His only son to pay the penalty for all of our sin. We just need to receive Jesus as Lord of our lives.”
At that, I thanked Grandma for sharing an important insight into God’s Word, then Cyclone and I ran to the shop to help Grandpa.
Dear friends as the old hymn tells us, “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so”. I hope you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior too, and that this little explanation of Jesus’ death and resurrection will bring you close to Jesus so you will have lasting peace and joy.
