Jesus Calms My Fear
“As he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves — but Jesus kept sleeping. So the disciples came and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die! ” He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith? ” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!”
…suddenly a violent storm came up…
Soon the disciples were yelling! They were so frightened, they shouted for Jesus to wake up. They were sinking! How could He be asleep at a time like this!? As Jesus woke up, He was disappointed that His disciples were so scared while He was there with them. I think Jesus might have been sad because they didn’t believe He would save them.
Other than our regular Bible studies in the mornings, Grandpa occasionally reads Bible stories to us before we go to bed. I really enjoy these special times. He finds scriptures that are just right for us and he interprets the scriptures so we can understand them better. The other day he read a story found in the book of Matthew where Jesus was with His friends, the disciples. They were in their boat crossing a lake. Everything was going along fine until suddenly a violent storm came up with waves higher than the boat.
It looked like they would be tipped over and Jesus’ friends were really scared, but not Jesus. He was fast asleep at the back end of the boat. I wondered if all the rocking back and forth put Him to sleep.
Jesus then proceeded to tell the wind and the waves to settle down, and soon everything was calm. The disciples were shocked to see how the wind and waves obeyed Him and wondered how He had done it.
Many times, I have to admit that, though I know Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I don’t always have faith in Him like I should—just like the disciples haven’t fully trusted Him either. When we don’t trust Jesus, I think we, too, must make Jesus very sad. He wants us to believe in Him because He loves us very much.
I like to think that God is on board with us and wants to drive out our fears. When we have a difficult situation Grandpa sometimes says, “Jesus is in my boat.”
